It has been exactly one year today since we moved here!
I can't believe it has already been a year - then again, when we look at everything we've done, it seems like we've accomplished a whole lot for a year.
I won't even bother doing a last year/this year comparison because we've pretty much exploded in terms of how much we're taking on this year. We are well on our way to being real farmers :)
That includes rolling around on the ground with pigs...and the fact that I consider my fleece lined pants, dirty sweatshirt and mucky boots to be perfectly acceptable to wear off the farm these days.
Being real farmers also means that we kinda/somewhat/maybe know what we're doing with this huge patch of orchard....at least we'd better know, considering we're selling our produce to a restaurant down the road!
We go out and water our 300+ tomato plants and don't even blink at the fact that that is 10x how many we had last year(!!).
We now look at chickens in terms of freezer space instead of cuteness...
Ok, that is a bit of a lie - I still love chickens - but these monstrous broiler chicks are a little lower on the cute scale than the layer chicks were. We are going to do a batch of a slower growing breed for the next round...
We now rush outside at 6am in PJs to check for lambs.
Mixing daily grain/beet cereal for a llama doesn't even seem strange.
The dogs have become such farm dogs that I don't even get annoyed when I call Abby and then just give up because I know she's dug up chicken remains and is happily eating them (and regular deworming has become a habit).
Yup, a lot has changed in a year!

congrats you guys! you should really stop making it all look so easy though, folks might get the wrong impression and think that anyone can do it : )
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! You've worked very hard to make it all happen. I can't wait to see the pigs and Zoey.
